It had happened on a job when Sam was almost fourteen; they had to take out a Shapeshifter. Everything was going right, it should have been easy, and it was Sam's first and last job. The Shapeshifter had crushed Sam's knee making it useless in a fight. Dean on instinct shot the Shapeshifter with the silver bullet in his gone, but it was too late, Sam would never be a Hunter. That's what John saw, he didn't lose a son, he lost a soldier.

Dean sat by his brother's side while Sam was in the hospital and refused to leave. His dad had drilled it into his head, watch out for Sammy, protect Sammy. He failed two times, and never again would he fail, his little brother's right knee was destroyed. After Sam got out of the hospital, John planned to leave Sam at Pastor Jim's. It was the best Sammy could have, or so he thought.

"I am not leaving Sammy," Dean informed his father. He refused to fail his brother again.

John was not seeing his son at the moment; he was filled with too much guilt over how he hadn’t been able to save Mary or save Sam to see past his training during the war. “Yes you will, that is an order, he is safer with Pastor Jim to look after him.”

“No sir,” Dean told his father. He wouldn’t leave Sammy here, he couldn’t, he had to protect his pain in the ass little brother. Sam could have died and that thought profoundly scared Dean, more than he was willing to share with anyone. He had learned a long time ago, you don’t share your feelings with John Winchester, even if he was your dad.

John’s expression was unreadable, and before he could say anything, he watched as Dean walked away towards the building where Sam was at.

Dean refused to look at his father; he wouldn’t leave Sammy, come Hell or high water. Dean knew without a doubt if anyone came after Sam now, he’d kill them, and anyone who tried to separate them.
